Dry ice is the solid form of co2. It is used primarily as a cooling agent. Its advantages include lower temperature than that of water ice and not leaving any residue (other than frost from moisture in the atmosphere). It is useful for sub zero cooling when mechanical cooling is not available or cost effective.
Dry ice sublimates at at a temperature of 194.65 K (−78.5 °C; −109.3 °F), at Earths atmospheric pressure. This severe cold makes the solid co2 dangerous to handle without protection due to the potential of burns being caused by freezing (frostbite). dry ice is generally non-toxic

Common uses for 16mm dry ice pellets
- Extraction and winterization: mixed with ethanol for a bath or slurry around -70 °C to chill jacketed columns, solvent tanks and winterization.
- Cold traps: packed into rotary evaporator and vacuum pump cold traps to catch solvent vapour.
- Shipping and cold chain: keeps frozen food, seafood and biological samples frozen in insulated boxes during transport.
- Backup cooling: keeps freezers and walk-in coolers cold during a power outage or equipment breakdown.
- Fog effects: dropped into warm water for low-lying fog at events, stage shows and haunted houses.
- 16mm pellets are the all-round size: easy to scoop and pour, and they last longer than 3mm rice pellets.

Physical and chemical properties
| Chemical name | Carbon dioxide, solid (dry ice) |
| Formula | CO2 |
| CAS number | 124-38-9 |
| Molecular weight | 44.01 g/mol |
| Appearance | White, opaque solid; gives off a white vapour (condensed moisture) in air |
| Odour | None |
| Sublimation point | -78.5 °C (-109.3 °F) at normal air pressure; it turns straight from solid to gas, no liquid |
| Solid density | About 1.56 g/cm³ |
| Gas density | About 1.5 times heavier than air, so the gas sinks and collects in low spaces |
| Gas released | About 540 litres of CO2 gas per kg (about 250 litres per lb) |
| Solubility in water | Slight; forms weak carbonic acid |
| Flammability | Not flammable |
| Residue | None |
Hazardous materials data
| Main hazards | Simple asphyxiant: CO2 gas can displace oxygen and cause rapid suffocation in closed or poorly ventilated spaces. Extreme cold: causes frostbite (cold burns) on contact. |
| Signal word | Warning |
| Exposure limits (CO2 gas) | 5,000 ppm over an 8-hour day (ACGIH TLV-TWA); 30,000 ppm for 15 minutes (ACGIH STEL); 40,000 ppm is immediately dangerous to life or health (NIOSH IDLH) |
| Protective equipment | Insulated gloves, safety glasses or a face shield, long sleeves; a scoop or tongs for handling |
| Stability and reactivity | Stable. Keep away from reactive metals (sodium, potassium, magnesium powder), strong bases, ammonia and amines |
| Fire | Does not burn; CO2 is itself a fire-extinguishing agent |
| Environment | Leaves no residue; the gas released is CO2 |
Transport (dangerous goods)
| UN number | UN1845 |
| Proper shipping name | Carbon dioxide, solid (or Dry ice) |
| Hazard class | Class 9 (miscellaneous dangerous goods) |
| Air shipments | IATA Packing Instruction 954: Class 9 label, UN1845, and the net weight of dry ice in kg on the package; the package must let the gas escape |
| Vehicles | Carry it where the gas can vent: keep a window open or the fresh-air vent on, and never leave dry ice in a closed vehicle |
Safe handling and storage
- Never touch dry ice with bare skin; wear insulated gloves and use a scoop or tongs.
- Use and store it only in a well-ventilated area, never in a small closed room, walk-in cooler, cold room or basement without ventilation.
- Store it in an insulated container that can vent, like our totes. Never seal it in an airtight container, bottle or jar: the gas pressure can make it burst.
- Never eat or swallow dry ice. Keep it away from children and pets.
- Spills: leave it to sublimate and ventilate the area.
- Disposal: let it sublimate in a well-ventilated place. Never put it down a sink or toilet (it can crack pipes) or in a garbage chute.
First aid
- Skin contact (frostbite): warm the area in lukewarm (not hot) water; do not rub it. Get medical attention.
- Eye contact: rinse with lukewarm water for at least 15 minutes and get medical attention.
- Breathing in too much CO2 (headache, dizziness, fast breathing, drowsiness): move to fresh air right away. Call 911 if breathing is difficult or symptoms continue.
- Swallowed: do not make the person vomit; call 911.

What customers say about our store
Quick and reliable service provided! - Scheduled an appointment with Wayne the other day for a Dry Ice order pick up, he will go over and above for his customers to make sure we are well taken care of. Even with a broken foot !
Thanks again Wayne!
You've got my business!
Wayne there has an excellent store, he has everything, really nice stuff at good prices, ultimately very fair compared to others. I will certainly be going back for everything I need. Got some things from a different place and spent 50% more, just go see Wayne first, he seems like he wants to help you out more than sell you out the door.
